If you would have asked me a year ago about saving egg shells, I would have thought you were absolutely insane.
Fast-forward to today and here I am saving every shell of every egg we use. We are NOT crack-a-lackin…
Get it…eggs crack…
Okay, moving on.
Why do I save egg shells? You may ask…
For 2 reasons:
- I sneak the crushed eggs shells into our chicken feed so our girls get some extra protein (they need it just like we do, and this way the eggs they create serve them too).
- I crush the egg shells and sprinkle them in our garden. The shells add calcium to the soil and help balance the soil acidity.
*I do not recommend doing this with eggs purchased from stores. I have only used eggs that our chickens lay, as I know they do not contain added chemicals and they come straight from their coop into our house. Do what you think is best, though.*🥚
Here’s what you need to do if you are going to re-use your egg shells:
- Rinse the shells after you use them. This isn’t necessary, but I do it because the shells tends to sit for a bit until I gather enough to crush and it helps with the mess.
- Preheat oven anywhere from 200*-350*F- doesn’t really matter, as the heat will kill any germs on the shells.
- Line a baking sheet pan with parchment paper and place eggs on sheet pan.
- Bake in oven for 25-30 minutes
- Let cool.
- Use food processor or blender to crush. Sprinkle/add wherever you plan to use them.
- Congrats! You just used every part of the egg🍳
Let me know how your egg-saving goes. If you have anymore ideas on how to use them, I’d love to know!
Wishing you happy hens and sunny days,
