This is one of my favorite DIY’s and it takes just a few minutes and only 3 ingredients- this tutorial shows you how to make homemade candles in 6 easy steps!
I am a freak when it comes to my home smelling good all the time, but was constantly getting headaches from store-bought candles, air fresheners, and wax melts. When my husband and I chose to transition to a more natural and low-tox way of living, I learned how to make candles first-thing!
Now that I know how to make homemade candles, there is no going back to store-bought!
AND the best thing about making your own candles, is how customizable the scent can be. You will never run out of your favorite smelling candle if you always keep the supplies to make them on-hand!

Here are the supplies you will need to make homemade candles:
- 1 cup of Beeswax
- 1/4 cup of Coconut Oil
- 25-40 drops of Essential Oils ( I use REVIVE oils and love everything about them- use code madiwoodhouse10 to receive 10% off your first order)
- Candle Making Kit – working with wax gets messy and you don’t want to ruin your cooking or baking dishes. By having a designated candle making kit you don’t have to worry about replacing your every day utensils. PLUS… double-boiling and clean-up is easy!
- Mason Jars
- Labels– so you know what scent your homemade candle is! These are perfect for mason jar lids- see below⬇️
Here are the steps you need to follow to make homemade candles:
- Once you have gathered your supplies and set up the wick in your mason jar/candle-safe container, heat a pan of water on the stove until it is at a rolling boil. Once boiling, place your candle making container over the heat and add in beeswax and coconut oil.
- Stir wax and oil until melted and combined while still over heat.
- Once completely melted, remove from heat and add in 25-40 drops of essential oils (keep scrolling to see my favorite blends❤️).
- Stir to combine all ingredients.
- Once combined, pour into candle container and let sit until cooled. Be careful to not move it around a lot or drop anything on it while it is cooling or you will end up with an air bubble like my candle below.
- Let candle sit overnight before you light it- when it is ready, ENJOY!
I know that making your own products can seem daunting, but once you get in the groove it is so easy and honestly very rewarding. I love knowing exactly what goes into my products that are around my family, and that we are limiting our exposure to harsh chemicals and ingredients that don’t benefit our bodies.
