Watch this video for a quick step-by-step tutorial❤️
The steps to create your own Mini Yarn Hats:
- Cut your strings of yarn for your hat BEFORE your start looping. This makes it much easier to assemble and it will go by quicker. For every hat, you will need 35-40 pieces of 4-5in string. If you are making more than one hat, I would suggest cutting all of the string for your hats so you don’t have to go back and forth between making and cutting.
- Once you have cut your strings, cut 1-1 1/2in slices off of the tube– how thick the slices are depends on how big you want the hats “fold” to be. This also determines how many hats you can make out of 1 tube; keep in mind that a paper towel tube will make you more hats than a toilet paper tube, so plan ahead how many you want!
- After your yarn and tube is cut, you can start looping the yarn. To loop, fold your piece of yarn in half, place the “looped” side of the yarn through the inside of the tube piece, and thread the ends of the yarn through the looped yarn and pull tightly. If you want to watch how I do it, review the video above! Repeat until the tube is completely covered in yarn.
- Once the tube is covered in yarn, you will want to fold the yarn inwards so all of the pieces are now on the inside of the tube. Reference the above video to see how I did it!
- Now, grab your toiler paper or cotton ball, and stuff it on the inside of the yarn. If you are using toilet paper, use 3-4 pieces and crumble it up. This gives your mini yarn hat an actual hat effect!
- Cut another piece of yarn to tie off the hat. Tie it off closely to the cotton ball or TP so there isn’t much room for it to wiggle around. Leave the tie-off pieces long- these will serve as your ornament loop or will allow you to tie the hats on a garland!
- Once you have tied off your hat, cut the remaining long pieces to give it a poof!
- Fluff the poof and you are DONE! You now have a mini yarn hat- how festive😉

I made mini yarn hats out of our classic Christmas decor colors following the steps above, cut long pieces of string to act as the garland, made mini pom poms (tutorial coming SOON), and draped it around the tree- SO CUTE!🎄
