My obsession with yarn pompoms are REAL, y’all.
I have fallen in love with how versatile yarn is and the fact that you can make practically anything with it. My sister, Callie, told me earlier this year that she can decorate for any party with cardstock, yarn, and tissue paper and I am HERE for it!
She is so right, too, because even a simple thing like yarn can transform a space if you use it correctly. I love going to the extreme when decorating, but this year I have learned to have a real appreciation for simplicity and affordability and it has really changed my perspective.
One of my favorite ways to use yarn is to make PomPoms- they are so cute and super easy to make! My sister made PomPoms and tassels for my birthday party and it was at that moment I discovered the beauty of yarn and its potential! Since then, I have made so many different yarn crafts. So, really, its all thanks to her that this tutorial is here😉

To make Yarn PomPoms, you just need a pair of scissors and yarn! Easy enough, right? 💁🏼♀️
I get my craft yarn from Walmart, and its usually around $3 and comes with enough to make a ton of crafts. You can make yarn projects for little to no money, which is also another plus!
If you want different textures, or a fluffier PomPom, you can use different types of yarn or even brush it out so all the threads separate. For this tutorial I am showing you the basic steps to create PomPoms, but if you want more detail and different types of PomPoms be sure to let me know in a comment below👇🏻
Steps to make your own Yarn PomPoms:
Take the end of your yarn and place it around 4 fingers, as seen below. There are multiple ways to make PomPoms but this is the easiest (and least expensive) way, since you don’t have to buy anything special to make them.
You are then going to wrap it around your four fingers 65-75 times. It seems like a lot, but it goes by fast and gets easier as you learn how to make them. This will make a medium-sized PomPom. If you want a smaller PomPom, wrap it around 3 fingers, and if you want a large PomPom spread your 4 fingers out and wrap it 75+ times. You can also brush out the threads so you have a fuller look, once the PomPom is made.
Once you are done wrapping, take the wrapped yarn off your fingers and place to the side. Make sure that you don’t unravel it!
You are then going to cut off a 6-7in piece of yarn to tie your PomPom. The end pieces will serve as your tie to tie it on a garland or wherever you are hanging it- be sure to not cut these off when you are trimming the PomPom.
Next, place the piece of yarn you just cut horizontally on a flat surface, and then place your wrapped yarn on top (open sides facing left to right)
Make sure that your cut piece of yarn is centered in the middle of the wrapped yarn and can easily tie.
After you have checked the length of the cut piece of yarn, tie it tightly around the wrapped yarn. Double-knot it so it doesn’t move.
After you tie your PomPom, you are going to cut the looped pieces. I know I know, you just did all that hard work to wrap it, but this gives it the cute PomPom look in the end!
Once all of your loops are cut, shape your PomPom and trim the pieces so its all even! This step allows you to make the pieces as long or short as you want! The shorter the pieces, the smaller the PomPom but the fuller it will be…the longer the pieces the larger the PomPom but the more malleable it will be. Its up to you, and if you don’t end up liking it you can always make another one!
In this step, you can use a fine tooth comb to brush out the threads to make it fuller as well! I like the look of the larger pieces of yarn so I typically leave them alone after I trim them up👇🏻
Voila! You have a Yarn PomPom🙌🏻
